Abstract

Motivation is an internal drive that influences effort and goal achievement, including in the context of sports. Motivation is divided into two types: intrinsic, which comes from within the individual (such as excitement or enjoyment), and extrinsic, which isinfluenced by external factors (such as rewards or support from coaches or peers). Sepak takraw, a sport combining elements of football and volleyball, is played with a rattan ball using the feet. The Sepak Takraw Student Activity Unit (UKM) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) was established in 2020 with the aim of developing students'skillsin this sport, and has participated in several competitions, including Pomprov 2022 and inter university championships in 2023. Research on student motivation in the UKM Sepak Takraw at UMS shows that the majority of participants come from the Physical Education program, with varied reasons for joining, ranging from personal enjoyment to the expectation of academic rewards. Factors such as support from friends, coaches, and a positive environment play a significant role in enhancing their motivation to participate actively. The research findings indicate a high level of motivation, reaching 80.25%. However, the study has limitations, particularly in terms of the sample, which is limited to students involved in the UKM Sepak Takraw, and the focus on motivation as the only variable. Despite these limitations, the study provides valuable insights into the influence of internal and external factors on student motivation to participate in the UKM Sepak Takraw at UMS.
