Abstract

This research explores the influence of social media, especially Instagram, on feelings of insecurity in adolescent girls. Based on New Media theory by Pierre Lévy, with two main approaches: social interaction and social integration. The aim of the research is to analyze the impact of social media on feelings of insecurity and understand the experiences of adolescent girls when using Instagram. Using qualitative methods and phenomenological strategies, this research involved interviews with four participants who are active Instagram users. The research results show that social comparison, the influence of Instagram celebrities, and the use of filters and photo editing features increase feelings of insecurity. Apart from that, likes and comments on Instagram influence teenagers' self-confidence. To deal with negative comments or body shaming, teenage girls use various strategies, including ignoring negative comments and focusing on positive content. This research provides insight into the importance of healthy social media use and how teenage girls can minimize feelings of insecurity to maintain their mental health.
