Abstract
The geographical and ecological conditions of Maluku Province as the largest archipelagic province in Indonesia make this province rich in marine resources, especially fish of economic value, namely pelagic fish. One of the phenomena that is suspected to be the cause of the abundance of fish in the study area is upwelling. The high fishery potential in this area cannot be utilized optimally by local fishermen because the search for fishing areas is still carried out traditionally, making it less efficient. Therefore, accurate information about pelagic fish’s Fish Catching Potential Zone (FCPZ) is needed. This study aims to identify the distribution of chlorophyll a and Sea Surface Temperature (SST), identify the FCPZ of pelagic fish in the Maluku Provincial Sea per season, and analyze the compatibility between the pelagic fish’s FCPZ and the upwelling phenomenon in the Maluku Provincial Sea using Aqua MODIS Citra data in the form of SST and chlorophyll a data from January to October 2023, VIIRS Boat Detection (VBD) data, and upwelling data. The overlay method on both parameters, namely SST and chlorophyll a, was used to produce a map of the pelagic fish’s FCPZ and predict the upwelling phenomenon. Based on the results SST ranges from 25-32°C and chlorophyll ranges from 0.05-28 mg/m³. The pelagic fish’s FCPZ varies from season to season, in the Western season as many as 230 points, in the Intermediate season I 159 points, in the Eastern season 881 points, and in the Intermediate season II 550 points. The relationship between FCPZ and the upwelling phenomenon is assessed by the percentage of FCPZ found in the upwelling location to the area of the study area, namely the Eastern season 0.0485%, the Transitional Season II 0,0051%, and the Western season 0,0016%.
