Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the height of the descending channel on shrinkage, density, chemical composition, hardness and microstructure in aluminum casting. The research method used is investment casting with variations of the descending channel with heights of 40 mm, 60 mm, and 80 mm. The chemical composition test results show that the chemical composition results found chemical elements (Al) 97.18% as the main ingredient, (Si) 0.735%, (Cu) 0.287%, and (Mg) 0.777% so that the elements present in the casting material include magnesium-silicon alloy aluminum metal (Al-Mg-Si). The shrinkage test results show that the channel height down 40 mm has the lowest shrinkage value of 1.77%. The density test results show that the 40 mm descending channel height has the highest density value of 3.04 gr/cm3. The microstructure observation results show that the channel height of 40 mm has grains that spread evenly between the channel height of 60 mm and the channel height of 80 mm. Vickers hardness test results show that the 40 mm descending channel height has the highest hardness value of 74.03 VHN. The optimal height of the descending channel will affect the flow rate and freezing process of the liquid metal. The faster the liquid metal fills the mold cavity, the faster the solidification process will be, and the higher the hardness value.
