Abstract

One of the endemic diseases that is still a major health problem in Indonesia is Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), with a mortality rate of 1023 people in 2022. Natural larvicide is one alternative in the spread of this disease. Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) and turmeric leaves (Curcuma longa L.) are one of the biolarvicide alternatives, because these two plants have secondary metabolite compounds, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of bitter melon ethanol extract (Momordica charantia L.), the effectiveness of turmeric leaf ethanol extract (Curcuma longa L.), and the comparison of the effectiveness of both plant extracts against the death of Aedes aegypti larvae. The method used in this study was post test controlled group design by including positive control groups, negative controls, and 3 comparison concentrations from each plant. The larvae were put into plastic cups that had been given plant extracts, then observed mortality every 6 hours to 24 hours. The results obtained by the bitter melon ethanol extract group have better larval killing power than turmeric leaf ethanol extract. The lowest concentration of bitter melon ethanol extract that can cause 100% larval death is 1.8%, while the strongest concentration of turmeric leaf ethanol extract, i.e., 2% is only able to kill 68% of larvae. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that bitter melon ethanol extract (Momordica charantia L.) has a better larvicide effect than turmeric leaf ethanol extract.
