Abstract
Antioxidants are defined as natural or synthetic substances that can protect cells due to the oxidation process. Natural antioxidants obtained from nature, namely bajakah roots (Spatholobus littoralis Hassk), were studied using the DPPH antioxidant activity test in vitro to have strong antioxidant potential. Alloxan induction aims to create oxidative stress in test animals. This study aims to determine the phytochemical content of ethanol extract of bajakah roots (EEAB) and prove the activity of EEAB in vivo with the parameters of malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the liver and blood plasma of alloxan mice. Bajakah roots were extracted using the maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent for 3 days. In this study, 30 mouse were used which were divided into 6 groups, namely normal control, Vitamin C positive control, groups 4-6 were successively given EEAB doses of 50, 100, 200 mg/kgBW. Alloxan induction is carried out intraperitoneally. Treatment was carried out for 9 days. Blood samples were taken before treatment as a baseline, after alloxan induction, and on days 3, 6, and 9. On the last day of treatment, mouse were terminated. The results of the EEAB phytochemical screening test contain saponin, phenolic, flavonoid, terpenoid and steroid compounds. The research test results show that EEAB is positive for saponin, phenolic, flavonoid and terpenoid compounds and has antioxidant potential at a dose of 200 mg/KgBW.
