Abstract
The human need for interaction in a new place will always have challenges. This new environment makes interpersonal interaction needed to adjust to a new environment that is certainly full of uncertainty. This situation side by side with uncertainty is also felt by new employees at Starbucks Surakarta. Uncertainty arises when they are interacting with senior employees at the Starbucks branch where they work. The purpose of this study was to find out how the uncertainty reduction strategy carried out by new Starbucks Soloraya employees in interpersonal interactions with senior employees. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research whose data was collected by interviews on a purposive sample of 8 people, each Starbucks branch representing 4 outlets in total in Surakarta. Informants must be active employees of Starbucks both contract and permanent, have worked for at least 5 months at Starbucks and are males & females. The results showed that new Starbucks employees had cognitive uncertainty in the form of limited knowledge about the new environment in which they worked, they were not sure of the new environment in which they would work, there was also behavioral uncertainty in the form of new employees who were not prepared or had the ignorance to estimate the attitude of others towards them in the new environment in certain situations and the strategies to reduce uncertainty carried out by new employees included Active strategies in the form of active efforts made before interacting with the interlocutor, namely old employees, passive strategies in the form of observing the character of old employees who are interacting with others, and interactive in the form of advanced interactions where uncertainty is tried to be reduced or even reduced so that they can interact directly to resolve the sense of uncertainty.
