Abstract

In the construction of a hydropower in a dam, it is greatly influenced by the penstock. Penstock is one of the components of the hydropower structure that functions to channel high-pressure water to the water turbine. In order to reduce the influence of water hammer that endangers the penstock, this structure is equipped with a surge tank. The placement of the surge tank greatly affects the construction cost of the penstock. This study attempts to calculate the effect of the location of the surge tank on the cost of the penstock. From several surge tank locations determined by the researcher, then a water hammer analysis is carried out so that the cost of the penstock can be compared. The method for analyzing in this study is to conduct a hydraulic analysis of the penstock which is influenced by the design of the pipe bend or energy loss due to friction between the water and the penstock, and the water hammer value obtained by braking the water in the penstock which is assumed to be done by closing the valve for about 10 seconds, so that the water hammer that occurs is added to the pressure analysis in the penstock. The penstock design, pipe diameter, and pipe thickness have been designed by Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC). This study is to calculate the diameter of the reinforcement in the concrete pipe with the equation of the force that breaks the penstock equivalent to 1/3 of the strength of the steel plate and the strength of the concrete reinforcement. Based on the analysis results, it was concluded that the cost of a penstock with a pipe without a surge tank is Rp 557.275.750.448,00, a surge tank 90 m from upstream is Rp 479.241.155.064,00, a surge tank 140 m from upstream is Rp 455.385.393.949,00, a surge tank 190 m from upstream is Rp 455385.393.949,00, and a surge tank 240 m from upstream is Rp 455.385.393.949,00.
