Abstract

This study aims to analyse the message of social withdrawal in the anime film Weathering with You through a semiotic approach. Weathering with You, by Makoto Shinkai, is a film that is not only visually stunning but also full of deep emotional messages. Social withdrawal is a recurring theme in Shinkai's work, and this research seeks to uncover how social withdrawal is displayed through symbols, signs, and visual representations in the film. The method used in this research is semiotic analysis, which involves the identification and interpretation of signs and symbols present in the film. Data was collected through viewing the film and then analysed using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The main focus of this research is on the main characters, their surroundings, as well as the use of weather and other natural elements as symbolic messages of Social Withdrawal. The results show that social withdrawal in Weathering with You is displayed through various visual and narrative elements. The main characters, Hodaka and Hina, each face their own form of social withdrawal represented by extreme weather conditions and social isolation. The symbol of constantly falling rain becomes the main visual metaphor for the feelings of isolation and uncertainty experienced by the characters. In addition, the use of colour, lighting and image composition also play an important role in communicating the emotion of social withdrawal to the audience. This research concludes that Weathering with You successfully uses semiotic elements to portray social withdrawal in a deep and complex manner, which in turn adds to the emotional depth and meaning of the film. This semiotic analysis provides further insight into how visual media can be used to convey powerful psychological and emotional themes.
