Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between sensation seeking and self-control with risk-taking behavior in mountain climbers. In this research, sensation seeking and self-control are factors that influence risk taking in mountain climbers. The hypothesis in this study is that there is a positive relationship between sensation seeking and self-control on risk-taking behavior in mountain climbers. The subjects in this research were mountain climbers from Soloraya Nature Lover Students, totaling 133 respondents. The sample collection technique used simple random sampling, with the subject criteria being students who love nature in Soloraya, aged 18-25 years, and who have climbed mountains at least twice. This research method is quantitative correlational with measuring instruments in the form of scales, namely the risk taking scale, sensation seeking scale, and self-control scale. The validity of the risk taking, sensation seeking, and self-control scales was declared valid with a coefficient of 0.6667-0.833. Apart from that, the scale was declared reliable, with a risk taking score of 0.657, a sensation seeking score of 0.691, and a self-control score of 0.885. The data analysis technique used is multiple regression analysis. The results of the analysis show that the correlation value has a significance value of 0.000 with p < 0.05, meaning that there is a positive and significant relationship between sensation seeking and self-control on risk-taking behavior in mountain climbers, so the hypothesis in this study is accepted. The higher the level of sensation seeking and self-control a mountain climber has, the higher the risk-taking behavior a mountain climber has. The test results between the variable sensation seeking and risk taking behavior obtained a value of 0.00, thus showing a positive and significant relationship. The results of the analysis test between the self-control variable and risk-taking behavior obtained a result of 0.341, so there is no relationship between self-control and risk-taking behavior. The effective contribution provided by sensation seeking with risk-taking behavior obtained an Rsquare value of 0.254 or 25.4% and the other 74.6% was influenced by factors other than sensation seeking and self-control. Risk taking contributes 96.3% to risk taking and self-control only makes a small contribution, namely 3.47%.
