Abstract

The Korean drama My ID is Gangnam Beauty explores the representation of symbolic violence related to beauty standards. The drama depicts the life of a woman who undergoes plastic surgery to achieve an appearance that meets societal beauty standards. Symbolic violence theory explains how power and domination occur through language, behavior, and social norms related to beauty. In the drama, beauty standards become the basis for symbolic violence. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative, with the research object being a scene in the drama that displays the symbolism of violence stemming from beauty standards. Data was collected through documentation showcasing symbolic violence. Data analysis follows Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, considering three components: denotation, connotation, and myth. Data triangulation was carried out to strengthen the validity of the research results by integrating various relevant data sources. The research findings reveal that the drama illustrates how existing beauty standards lead to violence against individuals who do not meet these standards, subtly pressuring them to conform.
