Abstract
In the case I encountered, there was damage to the rotation unit caused by brake failure. In this instance, the brake on the rotation of the Kalmar DRF 450 reach stacker experienced delayed release, which resulted in the spreader not moving. After visual inspection and pressure gauge measurements, it was found that the sun gear had fractured. The analysis indicated that the brake failure was due to a delay in release caused by the spring losing its tension. It was assumed that the sun gear was made of cast steel, which theoretically should have been safe under bending stress above a certain threshold. However, the material experienced fatigue defects, initially manifesting as micro-cracks that eventually led to the failure of the rotation unit system. To ensure the normal operation of the rotation unit system, it is advisable to conduct regular inspections and provide training to operators to promptly address any issues with their units. Replacing the sun gear with a higher-quality material can extend its service life and reduce the likelihood of breakdowns over time.
