Abstract

Nutritional intake is the main factor causing anemia. Protein intake is necessary for hemoglobin synthesis because globin is a protein structure. Likewise, iron (Fe) intake is needed as a source of heme in hemoglobin synthesis. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the correlation between protein and Fe intake and the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls. Methods: This type of research was observational with a cross-sectional design. A total of 83 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected using simple random sampling. Data on protein and Fe intake was obtained by filling in the FFQ form for the last 1 month. Hemoglobin (Hb) level data was obtained through blood tests using the cyanmethemoglobin method. Statistical analysis uses the chi-square test with a significance level of 5%. Result: The results of the study showed that 15.7% of protein intake was in the deficient category. Fe intake 54.21% protein in the less category. 56.6% were classified as anemic. In the anemia group, 69.2% of adolescent girls had insufficient protein intake, and 68.9% had insufficient Fe intake. Conclusion: There was no correlation between protein intake and the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls (p=0.575). There is a correlation between Fe intake and the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls (p=0.047). It is hoped that young women can increase food sources of protein and Fe to avoid anemia.
