Abstract

Students are individuals who are studying at the university level who have an obligation to carry out their duties, such as attending classes, taking exams and practicums. Practicum students have a greater burden than those who do not take part in practicums, which can trigger academic stress. Academic stress can be influenced by several factors such as optimimse, and hardiness. This study aims to test the correlation between optimism and hardiness on the academic stress of practicum students. This study uses a quantitative correlational approach. The research respondents consisted of 120 students of the Faculty of Psychology, University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta who participated in a practicum. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling. The data collection technique involved distributing scale including the academic stress scale (PASS), the optimism scale, and the hardiness scale. The data analysis technique used in this study is multiple linear regression analysis. The analysis result showed a significant negative relationship between optimism and hardiness on the academic stress of practicum students. With the results of R = 0.529 and F = 22.749 with a significance value of 0.000 (p <0.05), then the results on the Pearson correlation test on academic optimism and stress with the acquisition of (r = – 0.529, sig. 0.000, p <0.05) which showed a significant negative relationship between optimism and academic stress, and in hardiness with academic stress obtained a result of (r =– 0.333, sig. 0.000, p < 0.05) which means there is a negative relationship between hardiness and academic stress. Thus, all the hypotheses in this study are acceptable.
