Abstract

Salatiga City is a relatively small urban centre with an appealing and attractive natural environment. It is regrettable that the city of Salatiga lacks a shopping mall that meets the needs of its residents. It is not uncommon for residents of Salatiga City to travel outside the city for shopping purposes. It is therefore evident that the establishment of an ideal shopping centre, tailored to the requirements of the Salatiga city population, would serve to facilitate the shopping needs of the local community. The selected shopping centre is a mall building. It is also important that the mall reflects the characteristics and culture of Salatiga city, in order to provide a comfortable environment for visitors and to differentiate the shopping centre from other similar facilities elsewhere. Accordingly, the methodology employed in this design process is contextual. This approach is applied to both the physical and non-physical aspects of the design. One example is the incorporation of numerous openings and open spaces, which facilitate the naturalistic preferences of the Salatiga populace. This method enables the design to satisfy the community's shopping needs while also accommodating the local population's proclivities. Furthermore, this edifice can serve as an introduction to Salatiga city for external communities.
