Abstract
The controversy regarding homosexuality in Islamic studies is growing day by day. Various studies and ideas continue to emerge. One of them is the idea of Siti Musdah Mulia, who is a Professor of Islamic Religion and a women's activist. In his ideas, Musdah Mulia said that Lu>t{hi (the behavior of Luth's people) was not homosexual but anal sex. He concluded this based on his research regarding the meaning of homosexuality which is not in the Koran. This research uses a qualitative method with library research as the data collection method. Meanwhile, the analysis method uses descriptive analysis with data sources from books, journals, papers, historical notes regarding the theme. This research focuses on examining Musdah Mulia's ideas regarding the Qur'an Surah Al-A’raf verses 80-81 and their relationship with Al-T{aba>ri>'s interpretation. This research seeks to answer whether the idea of Musdah Mulia can be called an interpretation or simply an understanding of the verses of the Koran and the relationship between the understanding of Musdah Mulia and Al-T{aba>ri>,s interpretation. The conclusion of this research is that the idea produced by Musdah Mulia is not appropriate if it is said to be an interpretation because it does not meet the appropriate requirements, procedures and rules. Apart from that, the relationship between Al-T{aba>ri>'s interpretation and Musdah's thoughts is just a definition to legitimize his understanding because Al-Tabari does not explain differences in sexual orientation and behavior at all.
