Abstract

Background: In SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta, 23.4% of adolescents are overweight and 10% are obese. Consumption of sweetened beverages is one aspect that contributes to this overweight. Objective: To determine the correlation between consumption of sweetened beverages and nutritional status of adolescents in SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta. Method: This study is an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design using a simple random sampling technique. The total study population was 218 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on the sample calculation using the Lameshow formula, 59 respondents were selected with a sample collection technique using the simple random sampling method. Data on consumption of sweetened beverages were collected using the Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire form for the last month, and nutritional status data were calculated using BMI/U. Correlation testing used the Pearson Product Moment Correlation test. Results: 40.7% of respondents were 13 years old, 52.2% of respondents were male, 50.85% of respondents had pocket money of Rp10,000 - Rp15,000, respondents with good nutritional status were 61%, undernourished 11.9%, overnourished 20.3% and obese 6.8%, 66.10% of respondents often consumed SSB's and 84.7% of respondents consumed SSB's in the high category, with tebs drinks as the type of SSB's with the highest energy content of 311.61 kcal. Analysis of the relationship between consumption of Sugar Sweetened Beverages and nutritional status using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation test showed a result of p = 0.024. Conclusion: There is a relationship between consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and the nutritional status of adolescents at SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta. It is recommended that schools implement promotive and preventive measures to prevent nutritional problems, in collaboration with the Health Office.
