Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe: 1) The role of teachers in increasing the literacy of high class students, 2) supporting factors and obstacles in increasing the level of literacy among students in upper classes, 3) solutions to obstacles in increasing the level of literacy among students in upper classes. The type of research used is qualitative research using a phenomenological design. Primary data in the research was obtained from observation techniques, documentation, and interviews with school principals, high school teachers, and representatives of high class students. Secondary data sources were obtained from relevant journals, articles, books and previous research. To test the validity of the data in this research, triangulation of sources and techniques was used. There are three stages in the data analysis technique in this research, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This research shows the results that 1) the role of teachers in efforts to increase the literacy of high class students is implementing a book reading program before learning begins, familiarize students with reading and writing when learning takes place, giving reading and writing assignments, provide motivation to students. 2) supporting factors, namely the involvement of all school members and the community or parents of students. 3) the inhibiting factors are students' laziness to study, inadequate infrastructure and books, lack of attention from students' parents. 4) the solution to these obstacles is to motivate students, add and update books, provide socialization to parents of students to pay more attention and accompany students when studying at home.
