Abstract

Consumptive behavior refers to a common problem among teenagers, especially students. If this consumptive behavior is not stopped immediately, this could harm students from being able to plan their finances properly and correctly. Several factors influence consumer behavior, namely psychological factors, cultural factors, social factors, personal factors, hedonic conformity, economic literacy, and lifestyle. The aim of this research is to examine the influence of Economic Literacy and Self Control on Student Consumptive Behavior. The two hypotheses in this research include the minor and major hypotheses. The major hypothesis is that Economic Literacy and Self Control influence student consumption behavior. There are two minor hypotheses, namely that economic literacy has a negative effect on student consumptive behavior and self-control has a negative effect on student consumptive behavior. Muhammadiyah University Surakarta students were the population in this study. Then samples were taken using incidental sampling techniques, with a total sample of 150 students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. Quantitative research is the approach and method in this research. The data collection method uses an economic literacy scale, a self-control scale, and a consumer behavior scale. Multiple regression analysis was used as a data analysis method with the assistance of IBM SPSS 29. The results of the study revealed that there was a very significant simultaneous influence between economic literacy and self-control on students' consumptive behavior (F= 29.689; p=0.001; p<0.01). The economic literacy variable on consumer behavior has a very significant negative influence (t = -2.638; p = 0.009; p = <0.01), and a very significant negative influence of self-control on consumer behavior is found (t = -5.216; p =0.001; p=<0.01). The research results on the economic literacy variable are included in the medium category with RE results of 55.2 and RH of 52.5, and a percentage of 60%. The self-control variable which is included in the moderate category is proven by RE results of 90.2 and RH 85, with a percentage of 66.7%. The consumptive behavior variable is included in the very high category as evidenced by the RE value of 71.5 and RH of 45, and a percentage of 65.3%. The effective contribution of the economic literacy variable is 8.2%, and the self-control literacy variable is 20.6%. Then 71.2% is not included in the variables that were not examined in this study.
