Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of toughness on the DLC layer using the PCVD method, so the process of forming the DLC layer using the PCVD method uses pressure parameters of 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 mbar, time 4 hours and temperature 400oC . In this research, the material used, namely AISI 410 steel, was heat treated using a temperature of 850°C with a holding time of 20 minutes. The technique used is DLC with the PCVD method using a mixture of argon plasma and acetylene gas. Then SEM-EDS testing was carried out referring to the ASTM E986 standard and toughness testing using the Charpy method referring to the ASTM E23 standard. From the SEM-EDS test results, the average layer thickness at a pressure of 1.0 mbar was 12.353 µm, 1.2 mbar was 12.997 µm, 1.4 mbar was 15.213 µm and 1.6 mbar was 15.493 µm. So it can be concluded that the higher the pressure, the layer thickness will increase. From the toughness test results, it was found that the impact value for annealed AISI 410 steel was 0.556 j/mm2, in the PCVD process at a pressure of 1.0 mbar, the impact value was 0.302 j/mm2, 1.2 mbar pressure was 0.315 j/mm2, pressure was 1.4 of 0.7 j/mm2, 1.6 mbar pressure of 0.508 j/mm2. At 1.0-1.4 the pressure increases and at 1.4-1.6 the pressure decreases. After the PCVD process was carried out, there was a decrease in the toughness value. Except that in the PCVD 1.4 process there was an increase resulting in an impact value of 0.7 j/mm2, this was due to the presence of ductile areas on the fracture surface.
