Abstract

This study discusses how digital literacy among University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta students regarding hoaxes circulating on social media and the internet. Literacy regarding news and hoaxes regarding COVID-19 is how students' knowledge regarding true news and hoaxes and understanding from a digital perspective about COVID-19. With this research, it is hoped that digital literacy regarding COVID-19 news circulating on the internet and on social media by students of the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta can be known. The theory that will be used in this study is Paul Gilster's Digital Literacy Theory to understand how sources obtain information, understand information, evaluate information. The data collected was carried out through interviews, as well as technical data validity using data triangulation. Based on research that has been carried out, two out of five students of the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta interpret digital literacy as a skill in searching, counting, reading, understanding, and using, information on digital media. Research that has been carried out concluded that students at the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta do not have an interpretation of internet media literacy specifically so students have their own assessment. After knowing the explanation of media literacy, they can only explain that internet media literacy is necessary and important knowledge for internet users to sort out true and false news conclusions, then if digital literacy awareness among students, especially students of the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta can be increased again, it is hoped that hoaxes in digital media, namely social media and online news portals, will not be spread Wider to various circles and the hoax will only be something that will not be justified. In addition, good digital literacy skills will have an impact on oneself and the surrounding environment because the role of digital literacy will be realized properly and correctly
