Abstract

Overseas students can experience academic stress which results in a decline in mental health, student well-being, achievement, etc. Various factors can influence academic stress, for example social support and religiosity. The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between social support and religiosity and academic stress among overseas students in Surakarta. This research is a correlational quantitative research. The population of this study are active students who are currently migrating from outside Java and are studying and residing in Surakarta. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with a sample size of 140 overseas students. The data collection method uses a social support scale, religiosity scale and academic stress scale. The data analysis method used is multiple regression. The results of this study show that there is a very significant relationship between social support and religiosity and academic stress among overseas students in Surakarta (F = 9.098; R=0.324; p =0.000; p<0.01). Furthermore, there was no relationship between social support and academic stress (r=0.098; p=0.125; p>0.05). Then there is a very significant positive relationship between religiosity and academic stress (r=0.333; p=0.000; p<0.01). The effective contribution in this research was 11.7% with details of social support at 0.77%, religiosity at 10.95%, and the remaining 88.3% influenced by other factors. The implication of this research is that overseas students are expected to be able to apply problem focused coping so that even though their religiosity is high, they can reduce the level of academic stress they experience.
