Abstract

Students certainly have complex problems in college, often these problems can cause academic stress which has a negative impact on the lives of the students themselves. This study aims to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and social support and academic stress in students. This research is a correlational quantitative research. This research was conducted on a sample of 174 students from the class of 2020-2022, Faculty of Psychology, Muhammadiyah University, Surakarta. Data was obtained from the emotional intelligence scale, social support scale and academic stress scale. The data analysis used was multiple linear regression, with the results showing that there was a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and social support and academic stress in students, so that the major hypothesis could be accepted. Meanwhile, the results of the analysis on the first minor hypothesis show that there is a significant and negative relationship between emotional intelligence and academic stress in students (X1). Meanwhile, the results of the second hypothesis analysis show that the social support variable (X2) has a negative and significant relationship with student academic stress. The Summary Model obtained an R Square of 0.780, which means that the Social Support and Emotional Intelligence variables influence the Academic Stress variable by 78.02% simultaneously. With partial details, the Emotional Intelligence variable has an influence on the Academic Stress variable by 51.21%, the Social Support variable has an influence on the Academic Stress variable by 26.81% and other variables have an influence on the Academic Stress variable by 21.98%.
