Abstract

Background: Parents have their own parenting style in educating and caring for their children, and this influences children's language development. Parenting styles play an important role in educating children, the description of parental attitudes and behavior in children's language development, in the community or surrounding environment influences children's development, such as children's language development. Objective: The aim of this research is to analyze the relationship between parenting styles and language development in pre-school children. Method: Research design using quantitative research with a proportional random sampling research design. The population in the study was 114 pre-school children at Kindergarten Aisyiah 1 Gumpang Kartasura, the sample size used was 88 pre-school children and parents of pre-school children were selected using proportional random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire on parenting patterns measured by the PSDQ (Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire-Short Version) and the language development of pre-school children was measured by the DDST (Denver Developmetal Screening Test). Data analysis used the Spearman Rho Ranks Test. Results: The results of the study showed that most parents implemented a democratic parenting style 42.0% and children had normal language development 58.0%. The Spearman Rho Ranks test shows that the p value = 0.045, so there is a relationship between parenting styles and the language development of pre-school children. The application of a democratic parenting style allows children not to experience abnormal or suspect or untestable language development. Parental supervision and assistance is very necessary to carefully monitor the child's language development or if language delays occur in pre-school children. So in the pre-school age phase it is recommended to educate children using a democratic parenting style.
