Abstract

Introduction: Saliva has an important role in activities in the oral cavity as self-cleansing so its volume needs to be maintained. One ingredient that can be used is red pomegranate (Punica granatum L) because it contains flavonoid compounds and tannins that stimulate saliva secretion. The process of taking pomegranate metabolite compounds consists of two types of solvents, alcohol and water. Alcohol has an influence on the amount of saliva secretion. This study aims to determine the difference in saliva volume between gargling with alcoholic and non-alcoholic red pomegranate extract solutions in FKG students at Muhammadiyah University, Surakarta. Method: this type of research is quasi experimental. Saliva volume was collected twice before and after gargling. The saliva that has been collected in the medicine pot is then measured using a measuring cup to determine the total volume of saliva released. Subjects gargled with a solution of 30% alcoholic and non-alcoholic red pomegranate extract for 60 seconds and collected saliva in 2 separate collections on different days. The results of the difference in the average volume of saliva were analyzed using the paired t-test and independent t-test. Results: The results of the study showed that the difference in the average volume of saliva before and after gargling using an alcoholic red pomegranate extract solution was 0.10 ml, while in the solution non-alcoholic red pomegranate extract of 0.16 ml. The Independent t test showed that there was no significant difference between the two treatments for FKG students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta with a value of p=0.073 (p>0.05). Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is an influence of alcoholic and non-alcoholic red pomegranate extract solutions on saliva volume but there was no significant difference. The volume of saliva in subjects who gargled with a non-alcoholic red pomegranate extract solution was higher than with an alcoholic red pomegranate extract solution.
