Abstract
This research examines the compliments used by social media users, specifically on the America's Got Talent Facebook page. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to explain the types of compliments used by social media users on the America's Got Talent Facebook page using Wolfson's (1983) theory, and (2) to describe the functions of these compliments using the same theory. The data used in this research consists of statements containing compliments directed towards Putri Ariani, a participant in America's Got Talent. The comments were collected through non participant observation and documentation from the comments section of the America's Got Talent Facebook page. Data analysis was conducted in four phases: classifying, describing, analyzing, and drawing conclusions. The findings of this research indicate that: (1) there are four types of compliment topics expressed by social media users on the America's Got Talent Facebook page - Possession, Personal Appearance, General Ability, and Specific-Act Ability. (2) There are six functions of compliments expressed by social media users on the America's Got Talent Facebook page, namely: maintaining relationships, positive evaluation, spontaneous expression of admiration, softening criticism, strengthening other speech act formulas, and encouragement, with positive evaluation being the most dominant all compliments directed towards Putri Ariani.
