Abstract
The poverty rate in Surakarta City is ranked second as the city with the highest number of poor people in Central Java Province. There are many factors that cause poverty in Surakarta City such as limited access and lack of skills and education. The existence of these limitations still makes individuals look for all ways to meet their needs, one of which is by scavenging. Scavenger is a job that is underestimated because of their socioeconomic conditions that are indicted by poverty. This study aims to determine the portrait of socio-economic conditions of waste pickers in the Putri Cempo Surakarta Landfill Area, through qualitative methods with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews and observations with a total of 30 scavengers. The results stated that as many as 73% of waste pickers in the Putri Cempo Landfill Area in Surakarta City were women with an average age of 49 years. Then, 67% of waste pickers are elementary school graduates. The result of waste scavenging is Rp1.063.333/month with expenses amounting to Rp1.135.000/month. This shows that income as a waste picker has not been able to meet the needs of workers at the Putri Cempo landfill. For this reason, the government is expected to provide intervention in the form of assistance to relieve or reduce the expenses of workers at the Putri Cempo landfill.
