Abstract

The tourism industry is one of the leading sectors that has a major contribution as a driver of the Indonesian economy. However, in early 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic hit Indonesia which had an impact on the declining tourism sector due to travel restrictions and closures of tourist attractions as an effort by the government to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus. One of the tourist destinations that affected was a tourist destination located in Kalurahan Mangunan, Kapanewon Imogiri, Bantul Regency. The declining number of visitors has resulted in the surrounding community, especially people who are directly involved in tourism activities, affected on economic and social conditions. The purpose of this study is to analyze the socio-economic changes of the community around tourist destinations in Mangunan villager before and after the Covid-19 pandemic. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a geographical approach in the form of an ecological approach that analyzes the relationship between humans / social aspects and the condition of the surrounding environment. Data collection techniques used in the form of in-depth interviews and field observations with informant determination techniques in the form of purposive sampling. This research shows that there has been no social change before and after the pandemic in Mangunan village, community & cultural activities has returned to normal in 2023. Before the pandemic, Merti Dusun activities, which were carried out once a year, have now been held again by hamlets in Kalurahan Mangunan. Gotong Royong activities to clean tourist objects and their surroundings simultaneously by tourism object managers which were previously carried out regularly once a week have returned to post-pandemic. However, in the economic sector, the changes that occurred during the pandemic are still felt today by the community, especially traders in tourist attractions and other tourism workers. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, traders made a profit of Rp. 500,000 – Rp. 4,000,000 per day, after this pandemic, the income that was obtained ranged from Rp. 150,000 – Rp. 1,000,000 per day. The decrease in income reaching 50-90% occurred due to the lack of visits in several tourist attractions and changes in the behavior of tourists who are still reluctant to shop because they reduce interaction with others. Job opportunities and businesses in the tourism sector have not returned to pre-pandemic levels. Adaptation carried out by the community, especially the merchants & tourism workers, is to find alternative jobs or side jobs to meet daily needs. While the adaptation carried out by tourism object managers is to use a new strategy in tourism development, namely, Quality Tourism.
