Abstract

Poverty is a complex problem and cannot be completely resolved, especially in developing countries, including Indonesia. This study aimed to estimate the effect of mean years of schooling and life expectancy by gender on male and female open unemployment rates, and the effect of male and female open unemployment rates on the percentage of poor people in Indonesia from 2011 to 2022 using panel data regression with the application of the chain rule on differentials. The model selected in this study is the Random Effects Model (REM) for the male model and the Fixed Effects Model (FEM) for the female model. The results showed that male mean years of schooling had a positive effect on the male open unemployment rate, but male life expectancy had no effect. Then, female mean years of schooling had a negative effect on the female unemployment rate, but female Life Expectancy had no effect. Both male and female open unemployment rates had a positive effect on the percentage of poor people. Thus, mathematically, the Average Years of Schooling for males had a positive effect on the percentage of poor people, and the Average Years of Schooling for females had a negative effect on the percentage of poor people. Life expectancy for males and females had no effect on the percentage of poor people. Thus, the chain rule is not fully proven in this study. To reduce poverty, the solution offered is to facilitate access to schools and provide other educational support assets, so that people's opportunities and interest in studying increase. The government is also expected to equalize affordable health facilities for the lower middle class and easy access to hospitals. In addition, the government is also advised to hold training and social activities for the community to improve the quality and quality of the workers so that they have the ability and expertise so they can compete in the labor market.
