Abstract

The elderly are at risk of declining health, including declining cognitive function such as dementia. This high rate of dementia is a concern, providing health education is one of the solutions to its negative impact. The focus group discussion method is used to conduct health education. Health education conducted at Prolanis Puskesmas Pajang Surakarta about dementia is expected to determine the level of knowledge of the elderly. This study was quantitative with a one group pretest-postest pre-experiment design involving 34 elderly people as a sample that had been calculated using the total sampling technique. Data collection using a dementia knowledge questionnaire, the statistical analysis used was the Wilcoxon test. The results showed an increase in pretest and posttest elderly knowledge, as evidenced by an average of 14.79 to 21.79. The Wilcoxon test results obtained 0.0001, so there is a significant difference before and after being given health education about dementia with the focus group discussion method. Suggestions for future research include replacing other measuring instruments, developing methods, adding variables, and multi- site research to evaluate the effectiveness of Focus Group Discussion.
