Abstract

Film is a form of audio-visual mass communication that is effective in conveying social and moral values to all audiences. The film Dear David is a film that brings up the topic of sexual and gender harassment which is then used as a background to see the reception that is formed. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method using a reception analysis approach using the coding-decoding model by Stuart Hall to determine the meaning of messages received by female students regarding sexual harassment in the film Dear David. Based on the decoding results of the research carried out, it shows that the majority of informants are in a dominant position who accept that this film is stereotypic sexism in the form of ways in which teenagers look that do not conform to norms which are considered not good. Meanwhile, some informants were in a negotiating position in the form of Rape Culture who saw that sexual harassment could be negotiated because of the puberty period in teenagers. Apart from that, there are inappropriate forms of support from parents which results in teenagers' mindsets normalizing this.
