Abstract

Some people who drink caffeinated beverages on a regular basis have higher average blood pressure than those who do not. Caffeine influences blood pressure increases by binding to adenosine receptors and then activating the sympathetic nervous system. This will produce vasoconstriction of blood vessels and an increase in peripheral resistance, causing blood pressure to rise. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between the frequency and volume of coffee drunk and the occurrence of hypertension in the Polanharjo Klaten Health Centre working area. This is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative design. This study's population consisted of 364 patients from the Polanharjo Community Health Centre in Klaten. The sample size for this study was 79 people who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria include age > 19 – 44 years, consuming coffee, not smoking. Not taking anti-hypertension medication, not consuming alcohol, and willing to be a respondent. Exclusion criteria include respondents unable to provide clear information and respondents withdrawing. The SQ-FFQ questionnaire was used to collect data, and the incidence of hypertension was collected from doctor's diagnoses and medical records of patients at the Polanharjo Health Centre in Klaten. Data analysis is divided into two types: univariate and bivariate analysis. The Chi Square analysis with a value of = 0.05 was used to determine the association between the two independent variables and the dependent variable. Based on the results of the analysis, (1) there is a significant relationship between the frequency of coffee consumption and the incidence of hypertension in the work area of the Polanharjo Klaten Community Health Centre with the results of the Chi Square statistical test output obtained by a p value of (0.000) value (0.05), and (2) there is a relationship between the frequency of coffee consumption and the incidence of hypertension in the work area of the Polanharjo Klaten Community Health Centre with the results of the Chi Square statistical test output obtained by A p value of (0.000) value (0.05) was obtained between the amount of coffee consumed and the incidence of hypertension in the Polanharjo Klaten Health Centre work area and the results of the Chi Square statistical test. These findings indicate that both regular and excessive coffee consumption might raise blood pressure, so it is best to restrict coffee consumption to prevent the risk of hypertension.
