Abstract
Legal protection against criminal acts of defamation is regulated in Article 27 paragraph (3) of Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions, as well as the application of material criminal law against perpetrators of defamation through social media and legal sanctions from the perspective of Islamic law . Normative methods were used in this research. Data collection was carried out through literature studies taken from primary and secondary legal materials. Defamation through electronic media is punishable by a maximum sentence of four years in prison and a fine of 750 million rupiah in accordance with the ITE Law. Defamation through social media is included in the category of jarimah ta'zir because it is not listed in Islamic criminal law and is not found in the Al-Qur'an or hadith.
