Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of variations 2.466, 2.981, 3.304, and 3.363 wt% silicon in gray cast iron on chemical composition, microstructure, and toughness. The research process that will be carried out includes several tests, namely by testing Chemical Composition, Microstructure, and Toughness. Chemical composition testing was carried out using a spectrometer and then microstructure (metallography) using the SEM-EDS tool, and toughness using an impact test kit. The results of the chemical composition test, the higher the addition of silicon, the higher the percentage of silicon in gray cast iron. The results of metallographic testing, all materials were dominated by graphite and pearlite phases, then the higher the addition of silicon elements to gray cast iron caused the graphite shape to get bigger and thicker in size. Toughness test results, the higher the addition of silicon to gray cast iron, the tougher it is.
