Abstract

Poverty is a complex problem and cannot yet be fully resolved, especially in developing countries, including Indonesia. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of men and women’s mean years of schooling and life expectancy on the number of working people, and the effect of the number of working people on poverty in Indonesia from 2011 to 2022 using a panel data regression with the application of the chain rule in differentials. The selected model was the Fixed Effects Model (FEM). The results showed that men’s mean years of schooling and life expectancy each positively affected the number of working people. Then, women’s mean years of schooling had a positive effect on the number of working people, but women’s life expectancy had no effect. The number of working people had a negative effect on poverty. Thus, mathematically, men and women’s mean years of schooling and men’s life expectancy had a negative effect on poverty, while women’s life expectancy had no effect on poverty. Thus, the chain rule was not fully proven in this study. The government is expected to improve the quality of education by providing scholarships and making it easier for people to gain access to health services with adequate facilities. Apart from that, the government is also expected to expand employment opportunities and provide training to the community to improve their skills so that they are ready to enter the world of work.
