Abstract

Electroplating is a coating process that has been shown to increase surface hardness and coating on metal surfaces. This study aims to determine the effect of dipping time on gray cast iron plating coated with brass by electroplating method on object hardness, coating thickness, and corrosion rate. In this study the material used is gray cast iron coated using the electroplating method with variations in dipping time Nickel 60 minutes Brass 45 seconds, Nickel 75 minutes Brass 60 seconds, and Nickel 90 minutes Brass 75 seconds with a voltage of 12 Volts and a current of 5 Amperes. Getting the lowest hardness test results in the variation of immersion time Nickel 60 minutes Brass 45 seconds worth 87.7 HRB, variation of immersion time Nickel 75 minutes Brass 60 seconds worth 88.1 HRB, and the highest value in the variation of immersion time Nickel 90 minutes Brass 75 seconds worth 88.6 HRB. The results of thickness testing using microstructure obtained the lowest results in the variation of immersion time Nickel 75 minutes Brass 60 seconds with an average of 14.72 μm, continued with the variation of immersion time Nickel 60 minutes Brass 45 seconds with an average of 19.569 μm, and the highest in the variation of immersion time Nickel 90 minutes Brass 75 seconds with an average of 36.288 μm. Then in testing the corrosion rate of the specimen 60-minute nickel and brass 45 variations using seawater electrolyte, the corrosion rate value is 0.06909 mmpy, 75-minute nickel and brass 60 seconds variation the corrosion rate value is 0.06909 mmpy, and 90-minute nickel and brass 75 seconds variation the corrosion rate value is 0.06909 mmpy.
