Abstract
Corrosion is a serious problem that can occur with gray cast iron materials, especially when used in corrosive environments. To protect gray cast iron from corrosion, nickel (Ni) is coated on the surface of the gray cast iron using the electroplating coating method. Electroplating is a method of coating metal by passing an electric current to the anode and cathode which are in an electrolyte solution. The method used for this coating is the effect of immersion time with varying times of 60, 75 and 90 minutes on the layer thickness and corrosion rate of gray cast iron specimens. Varying immersion times of 60, 75, and 90 minutes resulted in layer thicknesses respectively being 11,363 µm, 14,681 µm, and 16,477 µm. Corrosion rate testing was carried out using the electrochemical potentiostat method and CS Studio 5 software, with three variations in immersion time, the corrosion rate values were obtained respectively at 0.037101 mmpy, 0.04663 mmpy and 0.037399 mmpy. Meanwhile, the corrosion rate of the raw material specimen obtained a corrosion rate value of 0.11305 mmpy. In the calculations, the corrosion rate value for the raw material specimen was 0.113396 mmpy and for the three time variation specimens the corrosion rates were obtained respectively at 0.037824 mmpy, 0.046978 mmpy and 0.037512 mmpy.
