Abstract

Gray cast iron has several weaknesses, including easy corrosion which can change the physical and mechanical properties of the cast iron. Therefore, this research was carried out to overcome this problem by coating Nickel (Ni) using the electroplating method. Electroplating is a method of coating metal by passing an electric current to the anode and cathode which are in an electrolyte solution. Nickel (Ni) plating was chosen because nickel's properties are resistant to corrosion and good aesthetic value. The method used is the effect of the length of electroplating immersion time on layer thickness, hardness and corrosion rate. The results of layer thickness testing with immersion times of 60, 75, and 90 minutes showed sequential thickness results of 11,363 µm, 14,681 µm, and 16,477 µm. From hardness testing using the Rockwell B Hardness method, the results were sequentially 84.00, 84.20, and 85.53 HRB. Corrosion rate testing was carried out using the potentiostat electrochemical method using seawater corrosive media on gray cast iron material which was carried out by a nickel (Ni) electroplating process with varying immersion times of 60, 75 and 90 minutes respectively to obtain corrosion rate results with a corrosion formula calculation of 0.037824, 0.046978, and 0.037512 mmpy. The corrosion rate results in CS Studio 5 software obtained sequential results of 0.037101, 0,04663, and 0.037399 mmpy.
