Abstract

Students are the hope of families and communities in changing and improving the social environment, but in achieving this noble goal students face various obstacles, one of which is consumptive behavior which is influenced by factors in the form of peer conformity and self-esteem. In this case the researcher conducted a study aiming to determine the relationship between self-esteem and conformity with consumptive behavior in UMS psychology faculty students. The research method used is a correlational quantitative approach with a purposive sampling data collection technique with a sample of 158 students studying at the Faculty of Psychology, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The research instrument used was a questionnaire with a scale of self-esteem, conformity, and consumptive behavior adapted from previous studies by researchers. Data analysis in this research uses multiple linear regression analysis. With the result that there is a significant relationship between peer conformity and hedonic lifestyle with the consumptive behavior of Psychology faculty students, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarata, so that the major hypothesis can be accepted with an F result of 11.727 and a significance of 0.000 with a simultaneous correlation of both variables of 0.131. While the results of the analysis on the first minor hypothesis show a correlation that occurs with a beta of 0.154 with a significance of 0.042 which indicates that self-esteem (X1) has a significant positive relationship with student consumptive behavior. The results of the second hypothesis analysis have a correlation with beta of 0.326 with a significance of 0.000 which also shows that the conformity variable (X2) has a partially positive relationship to student consumptive behavior.
