Abstract
Coral reefs are seafloor organisms that have high ecological and economic values. However, coral reefs are currently facing degradation due to increased global warming, then causing coral bleaching. Coral bleaching will get worse if accompanied by the El Nino phenomenon which makes SPL rise above normal temperatures. This study was conducted to determine the effect of the 2018-2019 El Nino phenomenon to coral bleaching event, monthly high SPL location, and annual changes of coral bleaching status. This research focuses on 2017-2022 period in the Coral Triangle by utilizing monthly SPL data from Aqua MODIS level 3. Normal SPL, hotspot (HS), and Degree Heating Week (DHW) calculations were performed to produce values that represent classes of coral bleaching processes. The results showed that the monthly high SPL has the same location every year, it shows high SPL in the East of the Coral Triangle at the beginning of the year, then moves to the West in the middle of the year, and returns to the East at the end of the year. The influence of high SPL in 2017-2022 on the coral bleaching process is only up to the Watch class with the largest area occurring in 2020 and the lowest occurring in 2018. This shows that the El Nino event in 2018-2019 did not have a significant impact on coral bleaching and the coral bleaching event is not only influenced by the ENSO phenomenon, but also other factors such as IOD.
