Abstract

Education is something that is important or really needed by students, which will be used as preparation to face life in the future. The education needed can be in the form of knowledge, material, or character. Education is obtained through efforts made with the aim of gaining knowledge, knowledge, insight and experience, developing character with the aim of achieving good achievements in the future. In order to obtain good moral character, a student who is still in the educational stages, he will need a mentor to develop him, and this is where the role of a guidance and counseling teacher at school is to provide appropriate guidance, which is based on an Islamic religious education approach. the right way for students to acquire good manners and good morals. The aim of this research is to explore more deeply the role of guidance and counseling teachers in developing students' character through an Islamic Religious Education approach, or based on norms in Islam at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta. This research also explores what impacts students experience after guidance and counseling teachers provide character development using an Islamic Religious Education approach. This research uses qualitative methods using interviews and documentation as data collection techniques. The results of the research show that there are two ways of character development carried out by guidance and counseling teachers at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta, through individual and classical guidance, guidance carried out using various approaches to Islamic Religious Education, and used as a solver for problems experienced by related students. social and learning, and the impact felt by students also varies, depending on the problems and character of the students themselves, some immediately experience good results, or there are also those who still need time to see changes in the students themselves.
