Abstract
This research is motivated by the many programs to be achieved, it is not uncommon for many problems to be encountered. One of them is the lack of students' interest in Religious Education, they tend to be more interested in studying general science and information technology. This is as a result of the ability of Religious Education teachers who are less professional, because there are several Religious Education teachers who teach in addition to Religious Education subjects, there are also Religious Education teachers who also teach at other schools. This study aims to describe the role of the school principal in efforts to increase the professionalism of Religious Education teachers at SMA AL-Muayyad Surakarta in the Academic Year 2022/2023, as well as to describe the supporting and inhibiting factors for school principals in efforts to increase the professionalism of Religious Education teachers at SMA AL-Muayyad Surakarta in the Academic Year 2022/2023. The type of research to be carried out is field research. The approach to be used in this study is a qualitative phenomenological approach. The subjects used in this study were school principals, Islamic religious education teachers and Arabic language education teachers at SMA AL-Muayyad Surakarta. Data analysis method with data triangulation technique. Research findings show that: 1) The role of school principals in increasing the professionalism of Islamic Religious Education teachers is very important and diverse. The school principal must act as an educator, manager, motivator, leader, administrator, supervisor and innovator. Through these roles, school principals can create a better learning environment, manage the school efficiently, motivate teachers and students, develop a culture of innovation, and ensure the achievement of desired educational goals. 2) Factors that support school principals in increasing the professionalism of Religious Education teachers include the maintenance of adequate facilities and infrastructure in schools to help a good learning process, enabling teachers to use these facilities optimally in improving the quality of teaching, while the inhibiting factors are weak motivation and encouragement. as well as high expectations from society, especially from students' parents, can be an additional burden for teachers and affect their motivation to improve professionalism.
