Abstract

This study aimed to find out English teachers' beliefs and their practices in teaching reading skills, to describe the discrepancy between teacher's beliefs and classroom practice, and to know the factors that influence the formation of teachers' beliefs. The type of research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection was carried out through interviews, questionnaires, documentation, and class observations. The technique used to analyze the data was based on Miles and Huberman's (1994) theory. The findings show that English teachers' beliefs in teaching reading skills are; 1) learning objectives, 2) classroom techniques, 3) teacher's role, 4) student's role, and 5) components of reading comprehension. Discrepancies were found in the aspects of learning objectives and class techniques. The findings show that there are four factors in shaping teachers' beliefs, namely English as a foreign language, the teacher's teaching experience, the teacher's experience as a learner, and training.
