Abstract

Arabic is an important language to learn. Currently there are many schools, especially Islamic schools that apply Arabic lessons. Various methods and ways are used by each school in delivering the learning material. Along with the Covid-19 outbreak, schools have to find ways to keep Arabic learning going well. SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surakarta implements Arabic language learning for its students by means of onlinebased learning through the WhatsApp application. This study discusses the steps in the online Arabic learning method via WhatsApp and the obstacles encountered in the context of learning Arabic online via WhatsApp at SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surakarta. This study aims to identify ways of teaching the online-based Arabic learning method via WhatsApp and identify the constraints that exist in the online Arabic learning method via WhatsApp at SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surakarta in the 2020/2021 academic year. This research uses field research with a phenomenological approach. The research subjects were school principals, Arabic subject teachers, and 15 students from class VIII. Data collection techniques are interviews, documentation and questionnaires. Data analysis using data reduction, test the validity of the data, and draw conclusions. The research results show that; The steps in learning Arabic online at SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surakarta include initial activities, core activities and final activities which have been obtained through lesson plans that have been made by the teacher. The obstacles faced include; Older teachers have difficulty using WhatsApp, students don't understand assignments, not all students have cellphones, the network is unstable, explanations from teachers are not detailed.
