Abstract

Introduction: Total blood cholesterol is related to insulin resistance in type II diabetes mellitus. β-carotene plays an important role in controlling blood glucose and fat because β-carotene functions as an anti-oxidant that can capture free radiation such as singlet oxygen, triplet excitation of carotenoids and improve status. antioxidants in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Objective: To examine the effect of β-carotene administration on total blood cholesterol in male rats with the Wistar strain of diabetes mellitus fed a high-fat diet and induced by Streptozotocin and Nicotinamide. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups with 6 rats in each group where X1 (negative control), X2 (positive control, 2 STZ-Na), and X3 (STZ-Na+β-carotene 10 mg/Kg BW). Experimental animals were conditioned with type II diabetes mellitus by inducing STZ 45 mg/KgBW and Na 110 mg/KgBW intraperitoneally. β-carotene supplementation once every II days for 30 days through a sonde. Examination of total cholesterol levels in the blood using the CHOD-PAP method. Paired t-test was performed to see the difference before and after treatment and one way anova test was used to see the effect of βcarotene supplementation on total cholesterol levels in the blood.Results: Total cholesterol level (X1a = 85,04 X1b = 83,33 X2a = 207,67 X2b = 205,19 X3a = 207,53 X3b = 110,22) , Paired t-test (px1 = 0,010 px2 = 0,004 px3 = 0,000), One Way Anova (p = 0,000). Conclusion: There was a significant effect (p=0.000) on total cholesterol levels after being given 10 mg/kgBW β-carotene every other day for 30 days with an average reduction of 97.31 mg/dL (53.11%).
