Abstract

The exchange rate is an important variable because a stable exchange rate indicates that a country's economy is relatively stable. Factors that can affect exchange rates include exports, imports, real interest rates, and foreign debt. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of exports, imports, real interest rates, and foreign debt on the rupiah exchange rate from 1986-2021 in the short and long run using the Partial Adjustment Model (PAM) regression. Based on the regression results, it is known that in the short and long run, exports and imports had no effect on the rupiah exchange rate, while real interest rates had a negative effect and foreign debt had a positive effect. The government must reduce Indonesia's foreign debt, increase exports by increasing the quality of international standard products, and reduce imports to maintain the rupiah exchange rate. In addition, Bank Indonesia as the central bank is expected to be able to control interest rates so that they are not too high or too low. Interest rates that are too high will cause consumption and investment to decline because loans become more expensive so that the rupiah exchange rate weakens. Conversely, interest rates that are too low will encourage excessive consumption and investment activities, resulting in demand for goods and services exceeding production capacity and thus increasing demand for imports, causing the rupiah exchange rate to depreciate.
