Abstract

Flavonoid chemicals found in green tea leaves (Camelia sinensis) have the potential to be used as sunscreen if incorporated into cream formulations. In this experiment, a stearic acid cream base was used at 15%. Stearic acid and triethanolamine (TEA) are used together to make creams. When TEA is mixed with free fatty acids such as stearic acid, a stable oil-in-water emulsion can be formed for use in cream formulations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of creams formulated with green tea leaf extract (Camellia sinensis) against UV-A light by testing their physical properties at varying extract concentrations. This study was conducted by making 4 formulas using consecutive variations in the concentration of green tea leaves is 0%; 1%; 5%; and 7.5%. Testing the physical properties of the cream includes dispersion tests, adhesion tests, viscosity tests, and pH tests, as well as UV-A protection tests. The results of the physical properties test showed that the addition of green tea leaf extract affected the physical properties test where the viscosity value increased, while the dispersion, adhesion, and pH all decreased with the increase in extract concentration. Statistical studies of UV-A protective activity revealed that there were significant differences in some formulas before irradiation, while after irradiation there were no significant differences between formulas with variations in green tea leaf extract. The results of the UV-A protection test show that the entire formula has protective power.
