Abstract

This study aims to elaborate on how voiceless fricative palato-alveolar [ʃ], voiced fricative palato-alveolar [ʒ], voiceless affricate palato alveolar [tʃ], and voiced affricate palato-alveolar [dʒ] in the initial, medial, and final positions were articulated by Mrs. Retno Marsudi. This study used descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected through observation of 16 YouTube videos of speech in English by Mrs. Retno Marsudi as Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs. The data were analysed by comparing the sounds articulated by Mrs. Retno Marsudi and sounds articulated in RP & GA. This study's result shows that Mrs. Retno Marsudi generally produces palatoalveolar sounds in initial, medial, and final positions. However, there was occasion on which she changed the articulation [ʃ] to [s] in initial and final positions; the articulation of [tʃ] to [t] and [ʃ] in medial position; the articulation [dʒ] to [s] and [g] in medial position. On another occasion, she was shifted [ʒ] to [ʃ] and [z].
