Abstract

K-pop has become a popular culture that has penetrated many countries in the world, including Indonesia. Many K-pop fans in Indonesia are Muslim because the majority of the population is Muslim. Just like other K-pop fans, Muslim K-pop fans have done fan wars. This study aims to find out how the motivation of Muslim K-pop fans is to carry out fanwars on Twitter. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The theory used in this study is the theory of parasocial interaction by Schramm & Hartmann, the theory of participatory culture by Henry Jenkins, and the theory of social identity by Henry Tajfel. The sampling technique in this study was purposive sampling with 4 research subjects who were Muslim K-pop fans who carried out fanwars on Twitter. Data collection is done by observation and interviews. The result of this study is that Muslim K-pop fans do fanwar based on intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. Intrinsic motivation can be seen from how the parasocial relationship between Muslim K-pop fans and their idols, while extrinsic motivation relates to the response or reaction from attacks by other fans.
