Abstract

Education plays an important role in life, especially for children with special needs such as mental retardation, who require a different learning approach from children in general. Mental retardation is an individual with a lower level of intellectual intelligence. Therefore, educational games can be a solution for conveying material, especially in learning multiplication and division. Currently, in the Sukoharjo State Special School, learning mathematics multiplication and division still uses notebooks and student textbooks as learning materials. The 2013 curriculum also requires teachers to have ideas and techniques to ensure students can experience the learning process optimally. Even though several approaches have been tried, they still face difficulties in maintaining the interest of mentally retarded students who often feel bored quickly and have difficulty concentrating. In order to address this challenge, creating educational games focused on the topic of multiplication and division emerged as a goal. This aims to provide new ways for teachers to convey material more easily to mentally retarded students, which is expected to increase their enthusiasm for learning. The development of this educational game involves gathering information through observation and interviews, applying the GDLC approach. The Construct 2 game creation tool was used to create this game. The test results using the blackbox method show that this game runs as expected. In addition, the assessment using a questionnaire involving the views of teachers and students received an SUS score of 87.58, indicating that the game being developed was very interesting and made mentally retarded children interested in playing it. Thus, this educational game has the potential to help mentally retarded students learn the concepts of multiplication and division more efficiently.
